Location of Steven F. Udvar Hazy Center Steven F. Udvar Hazy Center The first thing you will notice about the National Air and Space Museum's Steven F. Udvar Hazy Center is the unbelievable size of the museum. The Center will ultimately house more than 200 aircraft and 100 space artifacts. It has an amazing array of military, personal, and commercial aircraft. When you enter the Center you are on the second floor. On one side is the military planes and artifacts and on the other is the commercial and personal planes. Straight ahead is the space hanger. Just below you is the Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird, the fastest aircraft ever built. There are three levels for you to view the many aircraft here. The military aircraft include planes from World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. You can see the progression these planes have made. Also on display is the B-29 Superfortress Enola Gay, the plane that dropped the first atomic bomb in World War II. It has been fully restored. In the commercial exhibits you will get to see an Air France Concorde. Also see the prototype for the Boeing 707. Not all planes are big. Some are so small you wonder how the pilot ever fit into it. The smallest here is the Pitts Special Little Stinker that was flown to international recognition by aerobatic pilot Betty Skelton. The space hanger contains the Space Shuttle Enterprise. See many displays of items from early space flight all the way to today. There are also satellite examples and missiles. KAT'S VIEW This place was really cool! They had all these planes, and I mean lots and lots of planes. They had the one that dropped the first atomic bomb over Japan on August 6, 1945. It is the Boeing B-29 Superfortress Enola Gay. They had a bunch of space capsules and a space shuttle, the one they used for testing. |
