In 1799, George Washington's step granddaughter, Nellie, married his favorite nephew, Major Lawrence Lewis. For a wedding present Washington gave them 2000 acres of his Mount Vernon estate and arranged to have this house built. The mansion was completed in 1805. Nellie and Lawrence did much entertaining here. They lived on the estate until Lawrence's death in 1839. After that the estate passed through many hands until it was acquired by the National Trust in 1951. this is the first historic property to be administered by the National Trust.

Today, as you tour the mansion, you will find many things that had belonged to Nellie as well as items that had belonged to the Washington's from their Mount Vernon home. About 30% of the furnishings were original. The rest are period antiques like those that would have been in Nellie's home. If you gaze out across the horizon, you can still see the towering trees of the bowling green on Mount Vernon, Nellie's beloved childhood home.

The Trust has programs and events that they host here throughout the year. These include "Tea at Woodlawn" or you can arrange a private tea with your group of 16 or more people. They also have school programs for all ages with grade appropriate studies. There are programs for girl scouts, boy scouts, and other youth groups. In October you can enjoy the Haunted History Tour and December has special Christmas activities.

Be sure to plan a trip to Woodlawn when visiting Washington DC and Mount Vernon. You will enjoy the personalized tour.
