From 1831 to 1861, Robert E. Lee and his wife Mary Custis Lee made the Arlington estate their home. He once wrote that at Arlington House "my affections and attachments are more strongly placed than at any other place in the world." Lee considered Arlington his home and spent many of the happiest occasions of his life here. Today this house is preserved as a memorial to Lee in honor of his dedication to peace and reconciliation after the Civil War.

Tours of the house are free when you visit Arlington Cemetery. The house is very unique. You will notice the outside of the house is very different from many of the other mansions from this era. The entire house is able to be seen. About a third of the furnishings belonged to the Custis and Lee families and the rest are period antiques. They have done an amazing job of recreating the way the house would have been during the time Robert E. Lee lived here.
