Battery Dantzler is one of the stops on the National Battlefields tour. It was involved in the 1864 Overland Campaign and Siege of Richmond-Petersburg. There are earthen fortifications where the Confederate Army camped.

First named Ft. Howlett, the battery was renamed after Colonel Olin Dantzler who was killed on June 2, 1864 in an attempt to capture Ft. Dutton. Leading the 22nd South Carolina Infantry, the attack failed. Overlooking the James River, Battery Dantzler played a major role in keeping the union Navy down river form Richmond.
