The Adam Thoroughgood House
1636 Parish Road
Virginia Beach, Virginia 23452
Voice: 757-431-4000

The Adam Thoroughgood House dates back to 1680. The land was granted to Adam by King Charles in 1635. It was one of the largest land grants consisting of 5350 acres. It is not known exactly which one of the Thoroughgood's actually built this house, however it believed to have been built by one of his five grandsons. It is one of the earliest permanent brick structures built in Virginia.

Today, ran by the City of Virginia Beach, the house has been restored to represent plantation life from the 17th century. While the furnishings are not original to the family, they are from the 17th century and would have been of the quality used by a wealthy family from this period. The gardens have also been planted with care to represent the gardens of the 17th century plantation families.

KAT'S VIEW

The Adam Thoroughgood House was interesting. It was created with an English brick design. It had a very interesting cupboard that had a design like a checkerboard on it. The oldest thing in the garden was an elm tree that was over 200 years old.
