Location of North Bend Plantation Bed and Breakfast North Bend Plantation Bed and Breakfast The North Bend Plantation is rich in history and is a National Register property. The original portion of the house was built in 1819 by John Minge for his wife Sarah Harrison, sister of William Harrison, 9th President of the United States. The histories of the families from here and the neighboring plantations are intertwined through many marriages. The current owner, George Copland II, is descended from the original owners. The house was remodeled in 1853, doubling it in size. Union troops occupied the area during the Civil War and the owner at the time left, fearing for his life. He never returned. General Sheridan occupied the house and his troops stayed in the fields behind the house. They built the pontoon bridge to cross the James River to join the forces in Petersburg. Today, the rooms contain many heirlooms that were original to the house and from the neighboring plantations. One of the bedrooms contains the desk of General Sheridan (papers of his were found in a hidden compartment) and also the bed of Mr. Copland's great, great grandfather, Edmund Ruffin. Mr. Ruffin is credited with firing the first shot onto Fort Sumter beginning the Civil War. Each of the bedrooms has a private bath. There is a sitting room overlooking the back grounds and the swimming pool. The living room is filled with many interesting antiques from the family and the dining room has the dessert china that belonged to the original owner, Sarah Harrison. Breakfast is served in the beautiful dining room on fine china. You will begin you day with a hearty meal. Then you are ready to explore the history of Colonial Williamsburg, The James River plantations, and Richmond. North Bend Plantation is also available for special events and weddings. The large lawns provide great space for you function. A wonderful background for a classic Southern wedding, their wedding and events coordinator and caterer are available by appointment to personalize your occasion. |
