Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium is the only combined zoo and aquarium in the Pacific Northwest. You have to get there at opening time in order to see everything. The 29 acre zoo is home to 367 unique creatures. Some exhibits of special interest are: the Red Wolf recovery program, the Asian Forest Sanctuary, Rocky Shores, Arctic Tundra, Aquarium, Birds of Prey, Penguins, and Small Animals. Point Defiance Zoo has elephants, beluga whales, tigers, monkeys, sharks, polar bears, aardvarks, meerkats, lemurs, mole rats, walruses, otters, leopards, birds, seahorses… and the list goes on and on. Special programs include: animal presentations from zookeepers, "close encounters" in which an animal may be pet by passersby, Summer Zoo Camp, Zoo Tots’ Critter Club, Discover Nature Programs (ages 8-12), Kid’s Zone where kids can learn about caring for animals, and the Wild Wonders Outdoor Theater where animals do tricks. Other helpful services are the gift shop, cafés, stroller, wheelchair & umbrella rentals, picnic areas, Assisted Hearing Devices, first aid and free parking.
