The Dayton Historic Depot was built in 1881. It was originally located across the Touchet River and south of downtown. The first passenger train left Dayton for Walla Walla on July 19, 1881. In 1899, the depot was moved on roller logs by horse and winch to a new location on parallel tracks at the Commercial Street right-of-way. Since then the depot has been the center of downtown Dayton.

The structure has been altered only slightly in over 100 years of its existence. It is a two-story structure designed in the fashionable Stick/Eastlake style. The second story was for the Stationmaster's quarters. The interior walls are the original beaded board that was typical of that era. The rooms have high ceilings and wainscoting.

The building was listed in the National Register in 1974. In 1975, the Union Pacific Railroad donated the Depot and the adjoining property to the Dayton Historical Depot Society.
