The Dungeness Scenic Loop branches off of Highway 101 at Sequim and takes you on a tour through Sequim down to Dungeness Harbor and the Dungeness Spit. The spit, 5 miles long, is the largest natural sand hook in the Nation. It was formed from sand and clay that was eroded from the high bluffs to the west and were deposited by wave and tidal action.

The Dungeness National Wildlife Refuge includes much of the Spit and Dungeness Bay and serves as prime nesting ground for waterfowl. The bay is also full of Dungeness crab.

You can visit the Spit and parts of the refuge only on foot, and some trails are available for horseback riding in the Dungeness Recreation Area. At the end of the Spit, you will find the New Dungeness Lighthouse. Built in 1857, it is the oldest beacon North of the Columbia River.
