Location of Indian Painted Rocks Indian Painted Rocks With a short walk, you can see up to 80 images on the rock walls between Yakima and Naches. The age and origin of these images in unknown to both archaeologists and regional Indian Tribes alike. The pictures are similar to others found in the western United States and Canada. Most are believed to depict religious subject matter or records of hunts and meetings with other tribes. The rock paintings are located on the Old Indian Trail running between the Wenas Mountains and Ahtanum Ridge. This trail was also used in the 1850's by gold miners heading to British Columbia. The Indian Painted Rocks are located just off of Highway 12 about 1 mile past 40th Avenue. Get off Highway 12 at Ackley and turn right on Powerhouse. The Indian Painted Rocks are on the rock bluff at the intersection. Pictures of Indian Painted Rocks were taken by Darryl Franklin |
