Location of Leavenworth National Fish Hatchery Leavenworth National Fish Hatchery The world's largest salmon hatchery at the time of its construction in 1940, Leavenworth National Fish Hatchery is one of three US Department of Fish and Wildlife hatcheries operating in North Central Washington. These hatcheries were built to lend a hand to the Salmon of the Columbia River system after the construction of Grand Coulee Dam during the 1930's. Today, the hatchery releases 1.6 million juvenile spring Chinook salmon each year into Icicle Creek. The hatchery is open every day for public viewing. Stop in at the visitor center and pick up a tour guide that will take you through the entire process from fertilization to release. With a short walk through the grounds you can view the nursery, outdoor raceways, the fish ladder and spawning tanks. You can also go on a 1 mile interpretive trail that will take you through the old holding ponds and spawning shed. Be sure to stop in and browse the gift shop and take a look at the outdoor trout aquarium before you leave. Pictures of Leavenworth National Fish Hatchery were taken by Darryl Franklin |
