Dayton is a small town rich in the history of the Old West. Lewis and Clark first explored the area in 1806. The first settlers came in 1859. In 1872 the town got its name and the post office was established. But it was an immigrant named Jacob Weinhard that had the greatest impact on the town. He established the Weinhard Brewery and soon grew his empire to include the brewery, a malt house, saloon and lodge hall, theater, and also held interest in the bank. Between 1880 and 1910 many prosperous business men and farmers built impressive homes and buildings.

Today 90 of these structures are on the National Register of Historic Places. Dayton is proud to have the oldest train depot in Washington State. A must to see when visiting Dayton is the courthouse. It is the oldest working county courthouse built in 1887. It has been beautifully restored.

Dayton is a thriving county seat that honors the past. There are walking tours, annual festivals, and home tours. The town also offers first class accommodations, fine dining and interesting shops. It is also close to award winning wineries and the natural wonders of Palouse Falls and the Blue mountains. To get away from the hustle and bustle of modern day living, come to Dayton and step back in time.
