Port Angeles was established as a townsite by executive order from Abraham Lincoln in 1862. After the creation of the Olympic National Park in 1938, Port Angeles became a popular stop for travelers seeking the splendor of the Olympic Mountains. The headquarters for Olympic National Park is located in the city and near the headquarters is the Olympic National Park Visitor Center which has excellent educational information on the park.

Along the waterfront, you can catch a ferry to the Canadian city of Victoria on the Vancouver Island. At night you can see the lights of Vancouver across the Strait of Juan De Fuca. On a clear day you also have a beautiful view of the San Juan Islands. while on the waterfront, you can visit many interesting shops and also a marine science center.
