Fishing Kids introduces hundreds of kids each year to fishing, many of whom would not normally get a chance to go fishing. Kids aged 5-14 years old are able to participate. Yakima holds the largest one of these events in the state. For only $5, each child receives a "Fishing Kids" T-shirt and a Zebco rod and reel. Several groups from the community come together to sponsor this event. Volunteers are on hand to teach the kids about water/boater safety, fish identification and angler ethics.
To prepare for the event, Sarg Hubbard pond is stocked with rainbow trout, with a few dozen in the 6 to 7 pound range. Starting at 9:00 A.M., the kids are invited to try and catch one of these lunkers. Each child is allowed to catch and keep 2 fish to take home with them and volunteers were there to clean the fish so they were ready for the frying pan.
