Tacoma Narrows Bridges
State Route 16
Tacoma, Washington 98401
Voice: 360-357-2789

The Tacoma Bridges are located on Washington State Route 16 between Tacoma, Washington and Kitsap Peninsula.

The Tacoma Narrows Bridges use to be the Tacoma Narrow Bridge until just recently. When this bridge was first built it was unheard of to have a bridge of this size, and destiny had its harsh way with the bridge. Not long after it was built the wind would make it impassible to drive over.

The bridge became to be known as the Galloping Gertie. And the Third longest bridge in the world would all come crashing down on November 7 1940 after being open for only four months. Remarkable, although there was traffic attempting to go over the bridge, all the people got off the bridge before its collapse.

The replacement bridge was built in the same place and was opened in 1950 and has stood the test of time. With a new design the wind passes though the bridge to prevent the bridge to take on an air plane wing that was the cause of the first disaster. The wind simply lifted the bridge and the stress was just too much for its design.

Today there stands a second bridge and now they are called the Tacoma Narrows Bridges.
