Fort Worden was opened in 1902 near Port Townsend. The fort served as a U.S. Army Post and the headquarters of the Harbor Defenses of Puget Sound until 1953. After the closure of the Army post, the site served as the juvenile Diagnostic and Treatment Center from 1958 to 1971 before becoming a Washington State Park in 1973.

Today, the fort's buildings house a visitor center, The Puget Sound Coast Artillery Museum,, Centrum (an arts and creative education program), and the Port Townsend Marine Science Center. The park also offers campgrounds for tents and RV's, an underwater dive park, a boat launch, and plenty of sandy beach. See the historic Point Wilson Lighthouse that was built in 1913. It is often open for tours.

You will recognize many of the buildings and grounds of Fort Worden as the site for the movie "An Officer and a Gentleman". Touring the grounds you can see the Commanding Officer's Quarters on Officer's Row presented as it might have been when the colonel lived there in 1910. You will be able to see and visit many of the historic buildings.
