Pontin Del Roza Winery
Tasting Room Hours:
Pontin del Roza translates roughly in Italian to mean "Pontin (Ponteen) family farm on the Roza". The winery, founded by Scott Pontin, uses the grapes grown only from "the Roza" an area of south-facing slopes along the north side of the Yakima Valley. The Pontin family have been farming in the Prosser area for over 50 years, with their winery located on Hinzerling road just 3.5 miles North of Prosser.
they chose a site, planted the first wine grapes....from the old world to the new world, traditional and modern methods for the classic European wine flavor.
In the last centuries, Europeans discovered that for a grape variety to produce its best fruit and the best wine, it must be planted in a region where its maturity coincides with the end of the growing season. Ranked second as the nations grape producer, Washington has become an important wine region because of the northern latitude microclimate...long daylight hours, warm days, cool nights. All this ensures the just right balance of natural sugars and acids that are so important in the wine grape. Over the years, Pontin del Roza has carefully selected the grape varieties to fit the climate and soil. Pontin family plans a gradual growth within the industry, while remaining a small family-owned winery producing only the finest premium quality wines.
Beginning several centuries ago in the northwest part of Italy, a wine-growing tradition was established by the Pontin family. A pioneering sprit brought some of the Pontin family to the Yakima Valley over 65 years ago. Nesto Pontin's father, Angelo, immigrated to the Yakima Valley planting terraced vineyards just as his family had done for centuries in Italy. When Nesto and Delores expanded in the Mid-50's to farm on the Roza (their present location). They had a legacy, one that came form the many generations of French and Italian heritage. That heritage comes to the Pontin del Roza Winery, making this wine unique, fullbodied, and tested for over 200 years of family wine making.
