Located at the base of mighty Cheat Mountain and on the historic Staunton - Parkersburg Turnpike, present day US Route 50, the town of Durbin invites you to stop and spend a few relaxing hours delighting in the sights and sounds of the Durbin Rocket excursion train! Departing from the historic and beautifully restored C & O Railway depot in the heart of Durbin, you have the opportunity to ride and experience the sights and sounds of one of the rarest steam locomotives left in existence. The Durbin Rocket is powered by Old No.3, one of only three remaining operating Climax geared logging locomotives on earth. This 55 ton antique was built in 1910 for the Moore-Keppel Lumber Co in nearby Randolph county and worked there through the 1950s hauling timber and coal from the mountainside, until No.3 was moved to a transportation museum in Connecticut. Fittingly returned to it's native state in 2001 and placed in operation during 2002, this locomotive has been meticulously restored to every day operation.

As you begin your journey on the Durbin Rocket, No.3 will push it's train of vintage cars down the Greenbrier River valley at a rocketing speed of 8 or so miles per hour. Passengers have the opportunity to ride in either one of two nostalgic 1920 era cabooses formerly used in service on the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, or take in the experience of Pocahontas County's fresh mountain air from our open air "blue" car. After a 45 minute southward trip covering 5 miles, the train will stop at the remote Heavener picnic area at Piney Island, allowing a layover of approximately 30 minutes depending on weather conditions. Reboarding the train, No.3 will then pull the Rocket back to Durbin making for a 2 hour roundtrip.
