Location of Volcano Winery Volcano Winery Volcano Winery is the southernmost winery in America, and the Big Island's only winery. The winery produces 6 wines, 4 of which have won awards in international wine competitions. Rather than offer the more traditional wines that are found on the US mainland, Volcano Winery's niche is Hawaiian-made wine with a tropical flair. The winery has approx 14 acres of Symphony grapes planted in a vineyard that rests entirely on lava tubes. This makes it one of the most unique wineries in the world. The Symphony is a grape that crosses Grenache Gris with Muscat of Alexandria, and its bouquet is a "symphony" of peach, apricot, and lychee - hence its name. Aside from the Symphony wines, the winery is also known for its original fruit-blended wine and signature honey wine. They produce 3 fruit-blended wines: Volcano Red and Volcano Blush are both blended with the locally-grown jaboticaba berry and French Columbard, and Hawaiian Guava Wine is a tropical blend of yellow guava fruit and French Columbard. This wine won a Bronze at the 2001 Atlanta Wine Summit. Their dessert honey wine is one of their most popular wines, and is produced from the honey from macadamia nut blossoms. It is a sweet, light dessert wine that also won the Bronze for Honey Wine at the 2003 Riverside International Wine Competition in California. Volcano Winery is open 365 days a year, and offers free wine tasting of each wine. Many visitors credit the winery as one of their most memorable stops on the Big Island, especially since most of the staff are true locals who know all the nooks and crannies of the island and can give visitors tips on where to go that aren't found in the guidebooks. |
