Location of Williamsburg Winery Williamsburg Winery "Good Friend, What Matter How or Whence You Come Williamsburg Winery founder, Patrick Duffeler, Sr., invites you to tour through the barrel cellar and production area. At the end of your tour, join together in the tasting room and sample seven of these fine wines. You are even given your etched wine glass to take home as a keepsake. Opened in 1985, Williamsburg Winery released their first wine in 1988. This was a white blend they called 'Governor's White' and it immediately received praise and received a Gold Medal. Today it is still the most popular wine produced here. Mr. Duffeler's philosophy of 'make your wines meet consumer expectations' has allowed Williamsburg Winery to become the largest winery in Virginia, a state just beginning to make a name in the wine industry. Their top of the line filtration system (of which there are only 12 like it in the world) has allowed them to produce superior, full bodied wines with fantastic flavor. You will certainly want to serve one of these wines at your next gathering of friends and family. Now beginning their twentieth year, they are developing their Reserve Wines and have some very fine selections. One of the favorites (and an award winner) is the Gabriel Archer Reserve. This is a premium red wine, skillfully styled to reflect the art of blending in the Bordeaux tradition. We certainly enjoyed it and can see why it is so popular. After dinner of with your dessert, you will want to serve the full bodied reserve Blackberry Merlot or Raspberry Merlot (which went very well with our New York Cheesecake). After the tour, visit the wine shop and choose a bottle of your favorite to take home to enjoy with your loved ones. (They can also ship to many areas in the states) While visiting the winery be sure to take in lunch at the Gabriel Archer Tavern, nestled among the vineyards. Lunch is served daily from 11 am to 4 pm. Meals are reasonably priced and can be enjoyed with the wines you have just tasted on your tour. Delicious sandwiches and salads (not your average fast food variety by any means) are served or you can choose a scrumptious cheese platter or the French Country Platter (assorted pates, meats, and cheeses with fresh baked bread |
