West Virginia, otherwise known as ‘The Mountain State’, has a mix of elevations and climates, allowing it to grow a wide variety of grapes. While most states with warm climates plant the muscadine in their vineyards and see it flourish, West Virginia's climate is too cool for the Southern native grape. However, varieties of mostly French-American hybrids, as well as the Concord, Niagara and Delaware grape have shown promise throughout West Virginia, where wineries may also specialize in fruit and dessert wines. The wineries are spread throughout all corners of the state. |
