Devil's Tower is a natural rock formation in northeastern Wyoming. The tower's steep columns formed over 60 million years ago when molten magma was forced into the sedimentary rock above it and cooled underground. Over time, erosion of the softer sedimentary rock exposed the tower that rises 867 feet above its base and 1267 feet above the Belle Fourche River.

Since the first climbers scaled Devil's Tower in 1893, its vertical columns have become a popular destination for many climbers. Records have been kept of every climb since 1937 and approximately 5,000 climbers come here each year.

When Devil's Tower was proclaimed by President Theodore Roosevelt as the first national monument in 1906, it made Wyoming the home of the first national monument and the first national park, Yellowstone in 1872. Today, the National Park Service protects the tower and the area around it that includes forests and grassy meadows that are home to over 150 bird species as well as deer, prairie dogs and other animals.
